Question:
I’m looking for information on flying from Oslo, Norway to St. John’s, Canada. Plans are to travel after Sept 15/97. If you can give me any information pertaining to the cost of flying and the cheapest times to fly I would really apprecite it. Thx
Response:
Could you be clearer, Saint John, NB or Saint John’s NF? I assume Saint John’s Newfoundland. I suppose there are flights from St. John’s via Frobisher Bay, Greenland and Copenhagen, but I know this is very expensive. One way you might consider is to fly Halifax-Iceland-Oslo on Icelandair. I suspect they will be the cheapest, and with the least hassle. Fares drop after October 1. If you can get a cheap flight to London, then Ryanair has inexpensive flights from London Stansted to Stockholm, and Debonair flies from London Luton to Copenhagen. Intra-European flights to/from Norway are still not cheap as Norway is not part of the EU and thus air travel to/from Norway has not been deregulated. As I joked to my Norwegian friend the last time I was there, having just arrived from EU-land Denmark, "I am no longer in Europe" Personally I would do the Icelandair itinerary. Great service and the chance for a stopover in Iceland. Also Keflavik Airport has only eight or ten gates, so its a bit less crowded than Heathrow and Kennedy -Erik

False. Norway is effectively part of the inner EU market, and the air industry within and to/from Norway has been deregulated for a few years now. It is a small market, and Oslo airport is heavily congested (a new airport will be finished next year), which may be reasons why we don’t see any cut-price airlines serving Norway yet. >As I joked to my Norwegian friend the last time I was there, having just >arrived from EU-land Denmark, "I am no longer in Europe"
A common misconception, but still far from correct. >Personally I would do the Icelandair itinerary. Great service and the >chance for a stopover in Iceland. Also Keflavik Airport has only eight or >ten gates, so its a bit less crowded than Heathrow and Kennedy
Sounds like a good idea. – Helge Nareid

I know, I was making a joke. Norway is of course in Europe. I did find it interesting that during my latest Copehagen to Oslo train trip, We were visited by Customs at the Sweden-Norway border, but not at Halsingborg. Previously it was always the other way around.
Response:
London to St. John’s is pretty cheap most of the time with advance bookings. Maybe $500 return US on Air Canada
