In general, the sweet spot for cheap tickets is about a month or two out from departure (exceptions would be some really hard-to-get tickets, such as northern winter fares to Australia). Also, in particular, Jan/Feb and Sept/Oct are big on sales covering the respective following 2-3 months. Airlines don’t usually start discounting until they start developing a sense of how full the flights are going to be. The only people who book this far in advance are either neurotic planners or people who absolutely positively need specific dates. Both of those groups are willing to pay more, so why bother cutting them a break? miguel — Hit The Road! Photos and tales from around the world: http://travel.u.nu

My boyfriend and I are planning to marry next year in Italy and most of our guests will be flying from the US.  I’m wondering when the ticket prices will be cheapest.  I know we can’t predict for certain, but does someone know of a website that keeps track of historical airfare pricing data?  For example, do tickets in April typically go for a lot less than in May? Obvioulsy airfare in the summer months will be a lot more, so we’re avoiding the summer. thanks Susan
