Air Travel » Air Travel » safety at Newark airport?

Question:

>  I >haven’t flown out of Newark since Sept 11 and I’m wondering if the >security is better than it was last time I was there.

i am a flight attendant, and my base is EWR (Newark)…security has indeed tightened in the wake of 9/11…i suggest you give yourself plenty of time to get through security, and if you are flying CO, you will not be able to catch a flight if you do not check in 30min prior to departure, because that is the cut-off time for making sure your baggage is on the plane…i have no idea what kind of measures are being taken with ‘checked baggage’ (not my area), but i do know that there is not only National Guard on duty but also NJ State Troopers…

Response:

Newark is the only airport that I have seen that has the State Police actually checking ID’s after you clear secirity.  It’s the only airport I’ve seen anybody checking ID’s at past security.  Not really sure if that is an advantage or not, but they are there.

That has noting to do with security but is a Law Enforcement Program funded by a grant from Mobil to catach folks jumping bail bonds…..|-P

Response:

have they started yet screening all baggage at Newark airport?  I haven’t flown out of Newark since Sept 11 and I’m wondering if the security is better than it was last time I was there.  I’m particularly concerned about checked baggage.  Doesn Newark have one of those expensive screening machines? Or are they relying on intuition and/or dogs? Thanks.

Response:

screening all checked luggage begins 1/18/02 not enough bomb sniffer machines or dogs as yet to screen every bag but bags matching pax will be in effect and delays are likely at first security is a bit improved but to reach a level comparable with other world airports that have more experience won’t be realized for about a year or so — Air Travel Center airtravelcenter.com 1-717-732-7222 1-800-931-7222 1 East Manor Avenue (rear bldg) Enola, Pa.
