That’s right – the ones that came in *without* conquering and killing the natives. I find it frightening that someone can come out with a statement like "we don’t conquer but liberate" without blushing – given the history of the USA. Oh, incidentally, you might also wish to look up the history of Central America (keywords: General Food, Banana Republic). It might give you a more balanced perspective.

If you want google to get you there straightaway, try "United Fruit" and "Arbenz." (Or "cotton," "plantation," and "slavery" for more on liberation) Take care Jon Jon Beasley-Murray Literature Program Duke University (New Address:) Spanish and Portuguese Studies University of Manchester

Oh and you forgot to add that we Americans do not like Soccer or what the rest of the world calls "football"! And then the riots break out, stadiums collapse I’ll just sit back with my beer and watch ……On Police Videos!

You should really read what I have written. The US is not perfect. We are a county made up of people. My point, if you make a list of countries and their transgressions – we would be nowhere near the top – and no way even close to all the anti american comments I keep reading. On example: The US compared to the old USSR. There never seemed to be anti Soviet hatred like there was against the US. To me that’s just irrational and I question your motives. In terms of slavery, why is nobody protesting and having conferences against Sudan since they have slavery TODAY, we gave it up 135 years ago. Tens of thousands of Americans lost their lives to end it but lets not mention that. Lets just keep calling Americans Slave masters. Now do you understand my point? I don’t ask you to agree but surly you understand.

360,000 Union soldiers died We do not know how many of them died defending slavery, many of them were fighting to maintain the US.. Michael

Given the size of the United States of America, air travel is preferrable if you want to get across country in a hurry, either for business or on vacation if driving for several days is not in your plans. Now, in other countries, like the United Kingdom, the domestic market seems to be a lot smaller; I remember looking at a domestic arrival schedule in Gatwick and it was something like 1/100th the size of a comparable list at New York/Newark or Cleveland, both hubs for Continental Airlines. But Britain is small enough tha trains can do for most business travel; the Chunnel makes that an option for travel to the rest of Europe. But air travel is the preferred method for getting overseas. With a large amount of demand for air travel within the US and internationally from the US, why do you THINK a lot of us yanks post here?

No they started so many hiway projects to funnel money to their districts they took pity on us and gave us special dispensation. – But mainly just to the annoying Americans. They were loud and obnoxious and interferred with the road work. What most people "think of" anything technological really isn’t particularly interesting, except of course as a source of endless amusement — mixed with frustration when these know-nothings get to have a say in public policy. "Most people" seem to think that an electron is something about the size of a small pea, aren’t aware that mobile phones are radio transmitters, and think that "radiation" is something to be avoided in all forms and at all costs. — jeh
