Question:

Just out of curiousity: What happens, if next month, when I’m ready to fly NW, the pilots are on strike, and my flight is cancelled?   Blaine Thompson

The pilots can strike only after waiting for a day-day cooling off period following an impasse in the negotiations. They can only call for a strike if federal mediation declares an impasse in the negotiations. As negotiations are still in progress, and as NW just reached agreement with the mechanics union, it is less likely now that there will be a pilots strike — negotiations will probably continue for a while before any impasse will be declared. FWIW, a TWA pilot recently told me that they would be happy to take NW’s current pay — that’s how low TWA pilots are paid.  Apparently, NW pay today is about par for the big 4 airlines, and way above average for the other majors in the US. Beats me what the pilots are wanting to strike for!
