Air Travel » Air Travel Flight » What to do with US Dividend Miles?

Question:

Perhaps a bit premature of my part, but I’ve been thinking about what will become of the combined 200K+ miles my SO and I have accumulated on US.  Call me a pessimist, but when this airline shuts down on the 25th of March -as I think it will, since neither side of the labor dispute is bound to budge before then- I’m of the opinion that it will cease operations as we know it, for good.  Sure, chunks will be sold off, and smaller ops put in place, but…   At any rate, I’ve considered booking a series of flights on AA with my Dividend Miles so as not to loose them in the event of a shutdown.  Then, redeposit them if things work out.  ellen, ITRADE what are your thoughts? Anyone else care to advise? BTW, the irony of all this is that US just recently sent me an offer awarding me Gold Preferred status, through 2/2001, if I fly a much lower number of miles or segments than it would ordinarily take.   The key is the flights have to be completed by May 30th -something I could easily do if there is no strike/shutdown.  On the other hand, CO also sent me a similar offer, so we’ll see….  Oh the joys of air travel…. and the powers of marketing. You and I are in the same position. I asked this exact question over the weekend.  My wife and I have about 250,000 combined miles and I’d considered getting 6 AA F class certs and using them.  If US sticks around, I’ll bite the bullet and redeposit the miles into my US account. For $300 in redeposit fees, I’ve protected about $5,000 worth of FF miles. > BTW, the irony of all this is that US just recently sent me an offer > awarding me Gold Preferred status, through 2/2001, if I fly a much lower > number of miles or segments than it would ordinarily take.   The key is the > flights have to be completed by May 30th -something I could easily do if > there is no strike/shutdown.  On the other hand, CO also sent me a similar > offer, so we’ll see….  Oh the joys of air travel…. and the powers of > marketing.

How did you get one of those?????  I just got my Silver package which had better goodies than last year – namely two system wide upgrades which can be used at time of purchase – no waiting until the day before the flight!  Hope to hell that I’ll have the chance to use them. Rich

I have 300K. I dont see them going out of business though. Am I the only one that thinks this? >bound to budge before then- I’m of the opinion that it will cease >operations as we know it, for good.  Sure, chunks will be sold off, and >smaller ops put in place, but…

Why do you think it will be that drastic? >At any rate, I’ve considered booking a series of flights on AA with my >Dividend Miles so as not to loose them in the event of a shutdown. >Then, redeposit them if things work out.  ellen, ITRADE what are your >thoughts? Anyone else care to advise?

Rebound effect from yesterday’s loss – $1 plus.  And large losses since earlier in the year.  Stock is also up on the fact that the FAs met with US management today – about 10 days ahead of the NMB mediation meeting.  Hopefully there’s some movement Rich * Sent from RemarQ http://www.remarq.com The Internet’s Discussion Network * The fastest and easiest way to search and participate in Usenet – Free!

Your right about the stock price Rich… However, all airline stocks have taken a hit in the past year.  In a weird way, the recent increase in oil should help airline stocks.  Short term gain on increased fares based on cost of fuel. Bought some U yesterday at 18 and some TWA at 2.5.  So, I’m feeling good. Also have a family trip to FRA planned for May on US so they better stay in business! Rob
