Air Travel » Air Travel Flight » Chaos around Indianapolis: what happened?
Question:
I just got back from a trip to Washington that had me wandering all over the Midwest because of some problem in Indianapolis. According to the reports from the flight crew there was a roof collapse (?) at the Indianapolis ATC facility, causing all traffic into, out of or over (this was the part that affected us) that center to have to be rerouted. My TWA flight from DCA to STL was diverted way out of its way, had to make an unscheduled stop in Nashville to take on fuel, and of course was very late as a result. The cabin crew said all the flights coming into STL from the northeast were messed up in the same way, but I didn’t see any great evidence of this at STL. I haven’t heard anything about this problem, whatever it was, on the news, but as an altogether-too-frequent flyer, I’m interested in learning what effects it’s going to have on air travel in the near future. Word from the crew was that the Indianapolis ATC was going to be loused up for an extended time, probably some number of days. Is that going to continue to cause trouble with routings that pass over Indianapolis? Just what routings are going to be affected? And for that matter, precisely what happened? Any and all information would be appreciated, particularly since I have to get back on the plane in ten days … — Bill Johnson | "I can’t stand this proliferation of Los Alamos National Laboratory | paperwork. From what i understood, the regional ATC center in Indianapolis had to be shut down because of an incorrectly fixed air conditioner. I guess the repairman botched the job up, and crap came flying out of it. They were afraid it contained abspestos! (SP?), and therefor closed the control facility down. The regional ATC in Indianapolis watches over the airspace to 6 states i beleive, and delays occured through-out the midwest as a result. All flights here at Louisiville SDF were cancelled or delayed, and most other apts were affected (Atlanta, Ohare, etc) in the area as I understand it. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -> I haven’t heard anything about this problem, whatever it was, on the news, but > as an altogether-too-frequent flyer, I’m interested in learning what effects > it’s going to have on air travel in the near future.
